What is Online Marketing
When marketing is done over the Internet, it is termed as online marketing. It falls under the category of e-marketing which itself is a part of e-commerce. Online marketing was previously regarded as being unpredictable owing to the lack of knowledge and awareness among the people. However, it has now evolved in a very good method of promotion of products and services. The field of online marketing involves a variety of tools that are divided into two subheads, namely, search engine optimization and online advertising.
Online marketing is similar to marketing offline in the sense that the same marketing process that consists four steps is to be followed online as well. An online marketer is plays the important role of a communicator. His or her work involves building awareness among the prospective buyers about the product or service he or she is trying to sell. Thus, the marketer needs to establish a certain rapport with the prospects so that they feel comfortable with the marketer and identify him or her as being similar to them. There are certain techniques that can be used to keep the customer interested while focusing on his or her needs. These are as follows:
- Identifying
It is important to identify the needs of the customers one wants to market to which can be done through the Internet itself. This is known as marketing research.
- Anticipating
By providing an online marketplace, customers are given an option over the conventional offline outlets for products or services. Thus, the Internet acts as a supplementary channel for customers who can access information and make purchases as required.
- Satisfying
Customer satisfaction is as important in online marketing (and e-marketing on the whole) as it is in the offline marketing field. This can be achieved through various methods which include maintaining an easy to use and completely navigable website which performs optimally.
However, there are some people who are against the practices that are commonplace in online marketing. These critics argue that online conversations are not completely honest and open usually and this would mean a disadvantage to the potential buyer. This argument is quite true owing to the anonymity over the Internet. However, those who are in favor of such conversations argue that people are free to judge the credibility of an online marketer or company and the market can treat people who do not reveal correct information as it deems fit. This is because a business that only aims at making money (that is, profits) cannot expect to exist for a long time, irrespective of it being online or offline.
Activities under Online Marketing
It is always advisable to use multiple ways of advertising and it is more so in the world of online marketing as it helps bring more and more prospective customers to a person’s website. Marketers keep on trying new and new methods to advertise their products. This is quite easier in the online marketing world since marketers can implement a technique and see if it is yielding the results. If not, then the technique can be easily discarded.
One of the major activities involved in online marketing is search engine optimization. This is closely related with content development. For a website to be searchable on the Internet (through the search engines), it is important that the website contains relative content. This content is related to the type and purpose of the website and helps users easily find the website by using search engines.
Marketers may also develop certain useful tools to give out to the general public. This helps them gain the attention of the person to whom the marketer may try to sell something else.
An important point to be remembered when marketing online is that one cannot get any prospects or customers without spending in the first place to advertise or market.
